Northern Vs. Southern
Today we are going to talk about the farming lands of northern and southern Mesopotamia. The south was good land because the soil was fertile. The soil was good, but they did not get very much rain, and they had a yearly flood about the time they were picking crops. The people of the south invented levees. They controlled the water which made better farming land.
The north was bad farming land. The soil in the north was bad because the soil was hard and rocky. The rocks were washed down the mountains into the river. The rocks got into the soil and made it very thick. The river overflowed yearly and made the south flood. The flooding killed a few innocent people when it came and washed away their homes. After the flood waters went down the Mesopotamians that were still alive came back to nothing.
